Let’s talk 🗣 about 🧠 Executive functioning.

Executive function and self-regulation skills are the mental processes that enable us to

🧠 remember instructions and

🤹‍♀️ juggle multiple tasks successfully.

We can think of 🧠 executive function and self-regulation skills as an air traffic control 🎛 system in the brain, which helps us to manage information, make decisions, and plan.

Just as air traffic control at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritise tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.

The strength of seven skills can measure executive function:

1. Self-awareness: Self-directed attention.

2. Inhibition: Self-restraint.

3. Non-Verbal Working Memory: How well we can picture things mentally. This involves visual imagery and the ability to hold things in our minds.

4. Verbal Working Memory: Self-speech, our inner monologue, or internal speech.

5. Emotional Self-Regulation: Learning to use words, images, and self-awareness to process and alter our feelings.

6. Self-motivation: How well we motivate ourselves to complete a task without immediate external consequence.

7. Planning and Problem Solving: How we play with information in our minds to produce new ways of doing something. By taking things apart and recombining them in diverse ways, we can plan solutions to problems.

Executive functioning 🧠 differences are not fixed; they’re fluid 🌊

Some of our clients who experience difficulties with executive functioning struggle to analyse, plan, organise, schedule, and complete tasks. They also misplace materials, prioritise the wrong things, and become overwhelmed.

We develop bespoke insights and strategies that help them to succeed.

Understanding what factors influence their Executive functioning is important.
