No one likes rejection, criticism, or being perceived as a failure, so we avoid those situations if we can.
Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) is a condition that many of us can relate to, as it’s characterised by significantly heightened, intense negative feelings and severe emotional pain that is difficult to control.
RSD’s extreme, unbearable intensity sets it apart from emotional responses familiar to neurotypical people.
It does not have an official set of symptoms and is not a formal medical diagnosis. However, doctors and therapists often use the term when they notice exaggerated reactions connected to a recognised behavioural condition like ADHD.
Studies show that if you have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), you are more likely to have RSD.
Whether you are neurodivergent or not, the challenges of dealing with rejection, criticism, and failure in business are universal. However, for neurodivergent individuals, these situations can be particularly difficult to navigate. Therefore, developing an understanding of RSD is not just vital, but also a crucial step towards creating a supportive and inclusive work environment.
One of our clients was struggling with RSD in her workplace. Our experience supporting neurodivergent business owners has taught us that the tiniest of changes can achieve impressive results 📈 Together, we developed helpful tips to make her business life run smoothly.
🔍 Let’s explore how we can manage feedback conversations together.
🗣️ Before delivering not-so-positive feedback, start by acknowledging what I have done well, understanding the positive intentions behind my actions, and then explain how I can do it differently next time.
🧡 Help me trust your words and intentions by building rapport.
⏲️Give me plenty of notice that you want to talk about an issue so that I have time to gather my thoughts,
💭 I hate being caught off guard about something important.
📝With some notice, we will have a better conversation and outcome, and I won’t react by rambling, retreating, or getting
upset. 😧
👻 Please don’t ghost me!! If you need to cancel, drop me a reassuring message.
📅 When scheduling a meeting, please provide relevant information and explanation. If a meeting appears in my diary without this, I will spend the time worrying.
🙋♀️If you are waiting for a response, please check in with me, as I may be hyper focussing and forget (I will appreciate the reminder).
Remember, we are looking for progress, not perfection.
The tiniest of changes can achieve impressive results 📈
🪴📈 Now, let’s cultivate growth in your business and see it flourish.
How can we best support you ❓ Your success is our priority.
